Description
Summary:In view of the historically established relationships between religion and leisure and based on data from the study “Leisure in Brazil: representations and realizations of everyday experiences”, this article aims to understand whether religion interferes in the experiences and desires related to leisure of Southeastern Brazil residents. It is shown that religious commitments are regarded as obligations mainly in the evangelical segments and especially by women. The data indicate that religion influences activities carried out on the weekend. However, the imperative of work seems to drive both weekly activities and vacations. People’s imagery about what they want to do in their free time or during their vacations includes mainly activities related to tourism. The data presented here call attention to issues that deserve further studies on the relationship between religion and leisure.
