Zusammenfassung:This is a timely and well-conceived examination of the theology of history in the writings of two leading systematic theologians of the late twentieth century. Both in different ways express their indebtedness to apocalypticism and have been much criticized by biblical scholars for so doing. Gilbertson shows that in the light of recent biblical exegesis on the Apocalypse their theological intuition was basically sound. The approach of the book eschews the ‘two stage method’ (exegesis followed by theological reflection) in favour of a dialectic, and the shape of the book itself reflects that. So, there is juxtaposed an analysis of the recent discussions of the Apocalypse with outlines of the treatment of history in the writing of both Pannenberg and Moltmann.
