Description
Summary:The topic of Judaism and Hellenism has been frequently studied and over the years widely differing understandings have been advanced by distinguished scholars. While many have seen a polarity between those Jews who embraced Hellenism to the detriment of their Jewish identity and those who resisted it at great personal cost, the trend in more recent times has been to subsume the debate into what is fast becoming a cottage industry of writing about the whole issue of Jewish identity in the ancient world., The present volume had its origins in a conference on ‘Jewish Civilization between Athens and Jerusalem’ held at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 2003. However, not all the papers given then are included here, while several which were not delivered at the conference are.
