Description
Summary:At the turn of the millennium—from October 2000 to January 2001—a magnificent exhibition took place at the Benaki Museum in Athens devoted to representations of the Theotokos, the Mother of God. The exhibition was divided into six sections: on early representations of the Mother of God; on the private cult; on the public cult; on the icon that became the palladium of Constantinople, called the Hodegetria—the One who shows the way—and the monastery where it was kept; on depictions of the Mother of God in East and West; and on representations of the Virgin in connection with the Passion of Christ.
