Summary: | Volumes entitled ‘Introduction to the Old Testament’ were one of the great standbys of the period when historical-critical methods were taken for granted as the appropriate way to approach the material. The title was always misleading: no new student wondering how to engage with these writings would have found Eissfeldt's massive Introduction a congenial helpmeet. In this new study Christopher Seitz does not wish to change the terminology; what he regards as no longer appropriate is the exclusive concern to set the prophets in their presumed historical order, with little attention being given to their present position within the overall canon. |
