Summary: | Most of this book was written by Sarah Klitenic Wear, with her former supervisor John Dillon advising and contributing some sections (although it is not clear which ones). As classicists, they approach Dionysius from a Neoplatonic, rather than a patristic, perspective. This makes it clear how much Dionysius really owes to the Neoplatonists and how little, relatively speaking, to his Christian predecessors. This is not a new claim, of course, but the evidence is presented lucidly and convincingly, with plenty of quotations, many from sources which may not be easy of access to all scholars. It is refreshing to read a book that makes such good use of primary sources. |
