Sumario:Schleiermacher took great care in his choice of the music used in worship at services which he led. During his 25 years as a preacher at Berlin’s Dreifaltigkeitskirche (Trinity Church) he put into effect a theory of the liturgy in which an entire act of worship was to be conceived as a whole and a unity, and he therefore viewed it as inappropriate for the preacher to hand over responsibility for the choice of hymns to others. Schleiermacher liked to draw widely on a range of hymn-books, preferred to use recent hymns if possible, and was quite free—in a way which would now be quite impossible because of copyright legislation—to alter words in the hymns he chose.
