Summary: | This third and final volume of Francis of Marchia’s commentary on the Quaestiones in secundum librum Sententiarum, qq. 28–49, completes this invaluable edition (see JTS, ns 60 [2009], p. 738, and 61 [2011], pp. 383–4). The commentator becomes adventurous, leaving the sequence of Peter Lombard’s treatment of the huge subjects of the universe and its composition and the human soul and its powers to discuss aspects of the topics currently fashionable in the schools. This was happening in an academic world where commentary would be used to provide a row of pegs on which to hang consideration of scientific and philosophical as well as theological questions arising from or prompted by the study of the text. |
