Elliott'sEngaging Leviticus is a work of enormous erudition which surveys the work of commentators on Leviticus from Philo in the first century to Milgrom in the late twentieth century. But the bulk of the commentaries stems from pre-critical Christian sources; there is little in-depth discussion of Jewish approaches. Modern commentators have tended to mine the biblical texts for information about ancient history and culture or theorize about the composition of these texts. These are not the concerns of earlier writers who read Scripture for instruction in spirituality and to guide the church in their era., In his introductory chapter Elliott attempts to characterize the main features of Christian exegesis of Leviticus. |
