Description
Summary:Keith Bodner's study of the Elisha narratives in 1 Kings 19 and 2 Kings 2–13 builds on the literary approaches, particularly on the commentaries of Robert Cohn (2 Kings [Berit Olam; Collegeville: Liturgical, 2000]) and the present reviewer (1 and 2 Kings: A Commentary [OTL; Louisville, KY: Westminster John Knox, 2007]), that have become increasingly prevalent in biblical scholarship. In carrying out his analysis, Bodner is careful to study the Elisha narrative as an integral component of the Deuteronomistic History (=DtrH.) rather than to view it as a discrete or foreign composition that was inserted into the overall DtrH. literary framework by a later redactor. Within this framework, Elisha emerges as an agent of critique and of dismantling of the northern Israelite House of Omri.
