Description
Summary:Christianity is a religion of the Word, but it is not a static word. It is a Word which from the beginning of the life of the Church has demanded intense theological energy and imagination in a constant process of interpretation designed to form Christians in an authentic faith., Carol Harrison's book locates this creativity in the preaching of the early Church, demonstrating the ingenuity of early Christian preachers in creating a Christian culture which was both continuous with and discontinuous from that of the classical world. When we read the sermons, say, of Augustine or John Chrysostom we need to try to bear in mind their congregations: eager, responsive, puzzled, recalcitrant—and always to remember that these communications were intended for the ear not for the eye.
