Summary: | When Pier Franco Beatrice's groundbreaking study Tradux peccati: Alle fonti della dottrina agostiniana del peccato originale was first published in 1978, it received much praise, but also some criticism. In his review in this journal (JTS, ns 32 [1981], pp. 526–9) Edward Yarnold remarked that Beatrice undoubtedly brought together a host of scattered sources that showed that ‘Augustine's theory’ of original sin did ‘not spring up unaccountably after four centuries’, but that some aspects of his study were also problematic. He singled out three points. First, contrary to the impression given by Beatrice, Augustine himself was not limited to encratite, traducianist, and paedobaptist thinking when developing his theory. |
