Summary: | In recent years, an increasing interest in the legacy of the eminent Russian theologian Fr Georges Florovsky has emerged in the context of modern Orthodox theology. This revival is accompanied by an important critical, theological, and philosophical reassessment of various aspects of his ‘Neo-patristic’ programme and his implicit or explicit influence on the future of Orthodox theology in late modernity. Paul Gavrilyuk's recent and promising publication moves in this direction of ‘revising the standard narrative’ that often contrasts Florovsky's programme of ‘a return to the Fathers’ with the more progressive, liberal, and modernist stance of his contemporaries, who are presented as abandoning the patristic tradition altogether. |
