Three primary movements contributed to the decline of psychological trinitarianism in America: (1) the rise of Unitarianism, (2) the dominance of Scottish Common Sense Realism, (3) and a new-found resistance to the doctrine of self-love. These theological, philosophical and moral factors profoundly shaped the way Americans viewed the tri-unity of God in their post-Puritan world, explaining why so many theologians departed from the traditional understanding of the Trinity in the Western church.
