This typology was developed on the basis of the analysis of a large number of case histories of environmental conflicts, a number of which are included for purposes of illustration. Several historical examples are cited. The inference drawn from this study is that decisions become more responsible as decision-makers come under the scrutiny of and pressure from those affected by the decisions.
