| Zusammenfassung: | This article examines the vision of a properly-functioning Christian society propagated by the late-medieval Franciscan preacher Bernardino da Feltre. Heir to a rich legacy of economic thought within the Franciscan tradition, da Feltre focused on injustices suffered by the poor of his day at the hands of rich and powerful Christian bankers and especially Jewish lenders throughout Italy. To counter these abuses, Bernardino (and others) were instrumental in founding low-interest lending institutions—known collectively as the Monte di Pietà—that provided service to the struggling poor. The discussion contextualizes da Feltre's alleged Anti-Semitism within a profound ethic of socioeconomic justice that expresses core Franciscan principles. |
