Description
Summary:How can biblical exegesis constitute a vital bridge between theological reflection and pastoral practice today in the context of modern Europe? What is the meaning of the «new» evangelisation of which there is so much talk? What can modern scientific exegesis bring to the renewed evangelisation of Europe which some 450 years ago suffered divisions and separations in its spiritual and cultural unity, motivated by the primacy of the Word of God? How can modern exegesis, especially that exegesis which relies primarily on the historico-critical method, contribute to a renewed dialogue between revelation and history, faith and science, within the cultural horizon of a Europe which since three centuries has become heir to enlightened reason? The article seeks to answer, though rapidly, these questions which are of great relevance, at once historical and cultural, for the religious future of our continent. In order that S. Scripture may fulfil its primary function as «permanent foundation and the very soul of sacred theology» (Dei Verbum, n. 24), exegesis may not simply remain allied to historical disciplines strictly speaking, but must become fully a theological science which confronts the text inspired by the Holy Spirit and attested by the living faith of the Church, subject of the «reception» of the incarnate Word of God.
