La réflexion anthropologique qu’il greffe sur cette dénonciation reste de frappe protestante, même si le philosophe de Rotterdam s’efforce de parvenir à un certain degré d’universalité impartiale. Son approche est marquée à la fois par son expérience personnelle, par ses convictions éthiques, par son goût pour une érudition foisonnante et par une vive conscience de l’importance de la violence religieuse. Elle aboutit à une prise en compte plutôt inattendue des risques encourus par tous – y compris les protestants – dès lors qu’une religion ou une confession devient majoritaire. In his work as a critic and historian, Pierre Bayle (1647-1706) amplified the achievement of Calvinist theologians in their denunciation of the superstitions and idolatry associated with the cult of relics. The anthropological reflection which he built on this denunciation remains Protestant in character, notwithstanding Bayle’s pursuit of a certain degree of impartial universalism. His approach is marked by his personal experiences, ethical convictions, and taste for rich erudition, as well as his vivid awareness of the significance of religious violence. This leads him in the end to a rather unexpected recognition of the risks posed to all—Protestants included—once a religion or confession obtains a majority position. Die Anklage der calvinistischen Theologen gegen den Reliquienkult als Aberglauben und Götzendienst hat Pierre Bayle (1647-1706) sowohl Kritiker als auch als Historiker erweitert. Die anthropologische Argumentation, mit der er ihren Ansatz fortführt, bleibt protestantisch geprägt, auch wenn der Rotterdamer Philosoph sich darin um eine gerechte und allgemeine Stellungnahme bemüht. Sein Ansatz ist zugleich von persönlichen Erfahrungen, seinen ethischen Überzeugungen, seiner Vorliebe für allgemeine Bildung und dem Bewusstsein für religiöse Gewalt gekennzeichnet. Sie führt zur eher unerwarteten Einschätzung, dass Religionen oder Konfessionen, auch die Protestanten, wenn sie die Mehrheit haben, diesem Risiko ausgesetzt sind. |
