Resumo:The article reports that Thomas Merton interest in and engagement with the life and work of the early Cistercian Fathers is evident from his initial Holy Week 1941 visit to the Abbey of Gethsemani, when he read and commented in his journal on the De Diligendo Deo of St. Bernard of Clairvaux,' to the appearance of his earliest prose work, The Spirit of Simplicity and his history of the Order, The Waters of Siloe.
