Description
Résumé:This book has a clear purpose and content. Smith offers his translation of seven Greek and five Coptic documents plus one Greek inscription, all representing, in his view, the ‘Valentinian corpus’ (p. 5). His collection of sources includes fragments of Valentinus, Ptolemy’s Letter to Flora, fragments of Heracleon, Excerpts of Theodotus, an anonymous Commentary on the Prologue of John, an anonymous Letter, an anonymous Commentary on Valentinus’ ‘Summer Harvest’ (Greek sources), Gospel of Truth, Treatise on the Resurrection, Tripartite Tractate, Gospel of Philip, Valentinian Exposition (Coptic sources), and Flavia Sophe (a Greek inscription). Each translation is preceded by a short introduction. Smith informs us about the sources of the Greek texts in the volume. The study also offers rich bibliographies with primary and secondary literature. The volume concludes with two (Greek and Coptic) indexes of key terms. These are very helpful resources. As one would expect, the texts are published so that on the left page we have the Greek or Coptic document, while on the right page the English translation.
