Description
Summary:Although early Syriac literature, especially that of East Syria, still does not receive the same attention from patristic scholars as the Latin and Greek oeuvre, recent developments give some reason for optimism. This especially holds for the interest in the East Syrian Mar Narsai. According to the Comprehensive Bibliography on Syriac Christianity (The Center for the Study of Christianity, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem), the last five years show more than a doubling of the number of publications on Narsai as compared to the average number of studies per lustrum since about the middle of the twentieth century (seldom more than a dozen). Bou Mansour’s massive volume is one of them, since Narsai is one of the four authors under investigation besides three (relatively) more common names. Yet from the preface of the monograph we learn that it was not self-evident that Narsai would be included and that even a seasoned scholar like Bou Mansour was initially unfamiliar with Narsai’s thought. All the more reason to highly appreciate the inclusion of Narsai in his project.
