Σύνοψη: | In History and Eschatology: Jesus and the Promise of Natural Theology, N. T. Wright combines his expertise in the historical study of the New Testament and early Christianity with an analysis of contemporary approaches to the task of natural theology.Wright’s thesis ultimately results in a redefinition of natural theology. For Wright, the exclusion of the Bible from natural theology because of its status as ‘special revelation’ has been a mistake. The Bible, he argues, itself purports to refer to historical realities, including, most importantly, historical realities about the life and ministry of Jesus (p. xi). In chapter 1, Wright views the contemporary commitment to scientific progress apart from religious enquiry not as a result of Darwinism or ‘modernism’ but as the recapitulation and contemporary flourishing of Epicureanism. Wright detects several dualisms that have caused contemporary theology to operate within a framework that is foreign to the biblical texts. These dichotomies include the split between natural and supernatural categories, heaven and earth, general revelation and special revelation. The argumentation here is cogent, the scope of analysis is magisterial, and the observations Wright makes are impressive. |
