Summary: | Religions are put to the test in times of crisis. The response of the Church of Carthage to an epidemic (3rd century CE) revealed the resources Christians had for charity and the habitus or practice of helping others. These terms are translated here in terms of social diakonia and comprehensive care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Diakonia has to respond to the crisis taking account of its bio-political, socio-economic and environmental dimensions. Care has to be approached as a way of being in the world, on public, ecological and personal levels, in accord with Pope Francis' encyclical Fratelli tutti. |
