Summary: | In a professional capacity I am often asked, 'Why don't young Catholics today go to Mass?' This is usually part of a much wider issue: the lack of close, enduring engagement between young Catholics and the active worshipping community. As a researcher, though, I think a more interesting question is in the converse. Given the current cultural milieu, why is it that young Catholics, albeit it a much smaller number than previously, are still actively engaged and see religion as an important part of their lives? To this end, and as one part of a wider research agenda, I have been engaged in exploring the contours and nuances of higher levels of personal religious commitment in contemporary culture. One manifestation of this higher level of commitment and affiliation might be Catholics who attend the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM), and, more specifically, young adult Catholics who attend the TLM. This group has not been the subject of much empirical research as they are small populations and tend to be subsumed in large-cohort studies. |
