Description
Summary:Starting with a brief description of the status quo, dimensions of ecumenical rapprochement between Catholics and Protestants outside the official dialogues are first highlighted. These include the treatment of many issues in academic theology beyond denominational boundaries, the loss of importance of classical disputes in contemporary religious debates and the discovery of new forms of spiritual ecumenism in the recent past. Among the most important challenges for consensus ecumenism are open questions about the sacramental constitution of the church and the understanding of ordination, but also about the goals of the ecumenical movement. The article concludes with a plea to appreciate all small and large achievements on the way to church unity as a gift of God's grace, even if the ultimate goal proves to be unattainable.
