The Pseudo-Chrysostomian homily De compunctione et continentia (CPG 5062) is here edited for the first time, with a French translation, after a manuscript of the 14th century, the Oxoniensis Bodleianus Auctarium T. 3 12. The sermon, which is partly a patchwork quilt, would rather fit the corpus of the ‘Greek Ephrem’, as full of uncertainties as this ascription may be. Delivered in a monastic milieu, the preaching reflects a demanding ascetic spirituality, while exonerating the body of any responsibility for the passions of the soul. |
