Zusammenfassung:In order for any peace to be considered just, it must at least be the product of the basic functioning of a constitutional state, combined with securely guaranteed provisions for social justice. As Kant believed, this could be best achieved in a system of international law through a federation of free republics, but it should also include means for ensuring a fair distribution of economic wealth. One of the indispensable elements in the traditional argument for a just war was the acknowledgement of the right to use force in order to protect any system of peace based on the principles of law. Both Luther and the Augsburg Confession support the view that a limited use of force in defence of the maintenance of peace can be justified. Kant developed this idea in a more systematic manner, even though his opinion now seems to us to be too narrowly Europe-centred, and needs to be complemented by wider principles of social justice. One of the great achievements of more recent ecumenical discussions about the ethics of peace has been the incorporation of this principle, and the consequent recognition of the need for the development of a world wide strategy to evolve both peace and justice, not only between the nations, but within them too.
