Description
Summary:The Norwegian bishop Eivind Berggrav (1884-1959) is well known as a leader of the Norwegian Church Struggle during World War II as well as an ecumenical leader after the war. The subject of this article is Berggrav's peace initiatives during the initial phase of the war. From the beginning of September 1939 Bishop Berggrav made several attempts to establish contacts between German and British leaders in order to make peace negotiations possible. Partly his initiatives can be understood within the framework of the specific Scandinavian attempts at mediation during the war. But Berggrav's initiatives were also motivated by his position as an ecumenical leader, especially within the "World Alliance for Promoting Friendship through the Churches". At a meeting in Zilven, Holland, in January 1940, however, it became clear that there were different opinions on Berggrav's initiatives within the ecumenical movement. The article presents the development of Berggrav's peace initiatives, especially his contacts with British and German church leaders as well as political leaders like Lord Halifax and Hermann Goring. The reasons why his initiatives proved to the unsuccessfull are discussed in connection with a presentation of Berggrav's own motives.
