Resumo:The careers and tragic fates of Pastors Raul Schneider (29.8.1897-18.7.1939) and Oskar Briisewitz (30.5.1929-18.8.1976) offer an opportunity for comparing the repressive characters of the Third Reich and the German Democratic Republic and their treatment of church dissent respectively. Both pastors refused to abide by the limits imposed by the regime on their preaching and courageously undertook to wage a fight against the state's ordinances. Such moves were, however, not supported by the church authorities, even in the Confessing Church. Both were to become the victims of the state's counter-measures. But while at first, in the Nazi era, it was the local authorities and Party agencies which finally induced the central bureaucrats of both the state and the party to order Schneider's incarceration in Buchenwald concentration camp, in the GDR we find that the Ministry for State Security was actively engaged in persecuting Brusewitz from the start.
