Description
Summary:The Bauersche Foundry in Frankfurt on Main, one of the most renowned type foundries in Germany, and its director Georg Hartmann (1870-1954), a noted patron of the arts, were famous for their high quality block letters, including the popular Futura type, and for their bibliophilic print program. During the Second World War, Hartmann created several notable books. First he wished to support Max Beckmann, who was currently in exile in Amsterdam, and with whom he was personally acquainted, by working on a set of illustrations of the Apocalypse and of Goethe's Faust II as part of his bibliophilic print program. At the same time, he was hard at work on an illustrated edition of Hermann Hesse's Klingsor's Last Summer. Despite the fact that these projects were directed against the spirit of the times, the Bauersche Foundry was nonetheless obliged to take on a printing contract for Hitler. These antithetical activities provide a good example of the contradictory pressures experienced during this difficult period.
