Description
Summary:Research has found fault with document Didache 9f. for theological reasons, as well as the "initial phrases" which are missing and explained through various theories. The author now questions the legitimacy of this critique. While the Justin document contains the "initial phrases", they are neither seen as "prayers" nor as an "execution phrase" for the transformation of the Communion Offerings into the Communion Symbols, but rather quoted as a basis for the celebration. Because of the liturgical characteristics of the "initial phrases" the study determines the place of the Verba institutionis, analagous to the Festhaggadah, which is initiated in the Jewish Passover Festivity by the question: "What makes this night different from all other nights?". This ritual founded the Passover night. According to the document, the primary Christian Period originates in the blessing of the offering, which is done by means of a Eulogy-Communion-berachah. In a document like Didache 9f., which is a collection of communion prayers and eulogies, there is no place for an "initial phrase" which is expressed in order to found communion. Far-reaching consequences for the theology and liturgy of the communion ritual are suggested (for example the relationship between eucharism, teaching and office).
