Riepilogo:H.-Chr. Schmidt-Lauber, Professor of Practical Theology at Vienna University and former President of the Societas Liturgica examines the connection between the worship of the church and its 'diaconia'. Historically, a restricted understanding of worship and eucharist is always associated with a diminishing of the Church's image of itself as a serving community; conversely, revival of its 'diaconia' has always indicated a marked increase in the attention given to worship in the Church. From an inspection of the New Testament we see that 'leitourgia' does not embrace what Luther and the Reformation understood by 'worship' (Gottesdienst), while 'diakonia' stands for Christian worship as a whole, both in the Gospels (Lk 12:37) and in the Epistles. How this is to be developed in Practice: Revival of the Offertory in Protestant Services, with the money collection and intercessions–they have their place in the Eucharist: and a looking forward to the creation of a Eucharistic solidarity on the Ecumenical front.
