Summary: | The 2nd General Assembly of the latin-american Episcopate 30 years ago in Medellín (Aug 24th – Sep 6th, 1968) is one of the milestones in modern latin-american eccesiastical history. The documents of this meeting are an answer to the Second Vatican Council's request for a theological and pastoral renewal of the local churches. The Medellín bishops' received the documents from the Vatican Council in a creative and independent way. The bishops were motivated by John XXIII's challenge for the conversion of the whole church towards the poor and the efforts from a group of council fathers for an ecclesiological foundation, and also the practical realization of the "poor's church", but especially they were influenced by Pope Paul VI's determined promotion of a common pastoral for the Latinamericas. The renewal of the latin-american Church after Medellín is a good example and can lend ecouragement for the counciliar processes of reform in germanspeking areas. |
