Resumo:In this article Mark’s (10. 17-31) story of the rich man who approaches Jesus with a question is viewed as a teaching-learning transaction and is analyzed through the lens of transformation theory and research. The man’s emotional response to Jesus’ answer is characterized as a disorienting dilemma, the disruptive and unsettling experience that often triggers the critical reflection necessary for transformative learning to occur. Developmental stage theory is employed as a means of understanding what prompted the young man to ask his question and why Jesus responded to him as he did. The possibility that the man was transformed as a result of his encounter with Jesus is considered from the perspective of transformative learning theory.
