Summary: | While the common assumption that the Samaritan woman is immoral has increasingly been questioned, the implications of this insight for the characterisation of the woman and the tone and meaning of her engagement have not been explored. A more appropriate characterisation of the woman is that she is a proud Samaritan who uses the opportunity afforded by Jesus' request to assert her tribal superiority over the Jewish people. While the woman misses the import of Jesus' statements, she is not being evasive. Rather, she is engaged in an exchange in which she attempts to expose and deride the incredible claims of Jesus. Jesus' responses are not concerned to offer salvation to her as an immoral woman, but to point her beyond her tribalism to a new reality which renders this divide redundant. This approach offers potential solutions to some of the more difficult elements of the passage and reveals a continuity to the narrative that has been obscured. |
