| Summary: | In a lecture delivered in 1982, entitled ‘The Beyond and its Parousia’ (translated here for the first time into French), Eric Voegelin (1901-1985) sets out to develop some of the most important concepts in his late philosophy, concepts that this text addresses from the point of view of history and its ‘signification’. In combining a philosophy of consciousness with a philosophy of history, Voegelin opposes all immanentist ideologies inherited from the Enlightenment, which thought it possible to dissolve the tensed, ‘in-between’ structure of human existence. He seeks to restore to consciousness all its original thickness, illuminating it with the help of the Platonic notions of epekeina and parousia of the epekeina. These enable him, he believes, to grasp adequately once more the ‘in-between’ situation that is characteristic of the questioning existence of human beings in the world, as this existence is open erotically to the mystery of being and divine transcendence. RésuméDans une conférence de 1982 intitulée « The Beyond and its Parousia » (traduite ici en français pour la première fois), Eric Voegelin (1901-1985) se propose de développer quelques-uns des concepts les plus centraux de sa dernière philosophie, concepts envisagés dans ce texte du point de vue de la question de l’histoire et de sa « signification ». Articulant philosophie de la conscience et philosophie de l’histoire, Voegelin, contre toutes les idéologies immanentistes issues de l’époque des Lumières qui ont cru pouvoir liquider la structure tensionnelle d’« entre-deux » de l’existence humaine, veut restituer à la conscience toute son épaisseur originelle, en l’éclairant à partir des notions platoniciennes d’epekeina et de parousia de l’epekeina, qui permettent selon lui de ressaisir adéquatement la situation d’« entre-deux » qui est le propre de l’existence questionnante de l’homme dans le monde, ouverte érotiquement au mystère de l’être et à la transcendance divine. |
