Riepilogo:The invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation : the position of the Churches Russians and Ukrainians have the same religious roots but they are not the same people. This is the consequence of the Tatar domination that has isolated Russia from the rest of Europe for centuries and prevented it from the systematic elaboration of thought generated by scholastic philosophy, thus producing a genetic mutation in Russian mentality and life, profoundly influencing the concept of state and of civil society, of political regiment and of law and thereby increasing its gap from the West. During the same period and until the Truce of Andrusovo (1667) the Ukrainian lands were under the Polish-Lithuanian domination, where the cultural environment was totally different. This is not taken into consideration by Putin and Patriarch Kirill who follow the theory of Russkij mir (The russian world) according to which the peoples who received the baptism in the year 988 constitute a unit and their lands are considered therefore canonical territory of the Moscow Orthodoxy. This is a direct consequence of the idea of Moscow as Third Rome. Ukrainian churches strongly oppose the Russian invasion and firmly criticize Putin’s policy supported by Patriarch Kirill. Relations between Russian and Ukrainian Churches are seriously jeopardized and this will have an extremely negative impact on the Russian Church and its international prestige. This makes also xtremely difficult and delicate the Pope’s intervention to foster peace between the parties n conflict.
