Riepilogo:Although it must be admitted that the present position of Johannine studies is characterised by a sense of discovery and by an exciting new set of questions (Rensberger 1988:30), it can still be said that there is general acknowledgement and approval of the fact that the aspect of faith, according to John's own statement in 20:30, constitutes a major theme in his Gospel. This also accounts for the farewell discourses (Beutler 1984:9, Culpepper 1983:39). It is therefore of major importance for the understanding of the discourse to trace and decipher the aspect of faith in the Gospel as a whole and to try to understand as clearly as possible how this concept is presented by the implied author. It is also my conviction that there is a direct relationship between the Christology of the Fourth Gospel and the aspect of faith within it.
