| Summary: | My former colleague in Utrecht, the famous historian Dr. Peter Geyl, has called the study of history ""a never-ending debate""1. This thesis may give rise to a very lively discussion, for not everyone will immediately accept this view as the last word. But this is not the right moment to test the correctness of this descriptionption of Clio's temple. However that may be. it is not unfair to say that it holds good for that part of history which has brought us together, the study of the New Testament. It is a never ending debate; the same questions are repeated, the same ground is covered and it often seems as though hardly any progress is made. What is convincing evidence to one scholar, can hardly stand in the eyes of another. Therefore this expression ""once more"" can have an annoying effect. |
