总结: | It is not my purpose in this study to debate the fine grammatical points of John's micro-style; there may in fact be cogent compositional reasons for some of the alleged infelicities that commentators call attention to (Osborne 2002, 24). Rather, my intention is to examine certain higher-level formal characteristics which would reinforce the assertion that this "revelation by and about Jesus Christ" (subjective + objective genitive, 1:1) presents us with an intricately constituted text of demonstrable literary excellence. The book's artistically-fashioned macro-style serves a number of important compositional functions and also manifests several features of, often, unrecognised hermeneutical, even theological, significance. Only a relatively small portion of the text can be examined in detail here, but this should be sufficient to support the case that carefully patterned discourse organisation is an aspect of the Apocalypse which deserves still further investigation. My analysis also suggests that, while content is crucial in exegesis, stylistic form is not only a means to an end, but also is "meaningful" in and of itself. The text's multi-faceted literary-rhetorical structure will be illustrated with respect to two additional communicative dimensions, namely, its oral-aural locutionary design as well as its visual arrangement in terms of its formatted display on the printed page. |
