| Summary: | The topic of Christian art is often overlooked when reconstructing the controversies during the modernist crisis. The German theologians and historians Friedrich Schneider and Joseph Sauer proposed a historical criticism of ecclesiastical medievalism in art and architecture, and favoured instead the sane modernity of High Renaissance art - a unique synthesis which had been destroyed, in their view, by Reformation and Counterreformation alike. This put the two reformers into contrast both with anti-modernist and secular ideological interpretations of Christian art. |
