Description
Summary:The article analyses the Young People’s Society of Christian Endeavour as an example of Protestant sociability in Portugal in the early 20th century. Having its origins in the United States, in the second half of the 19th century, the Christian Endeavor leagues or societies quickly spread to Europe, arriving in Portugal in 1903 by Diogo Cassels, who founded the first League at Vila Nova de Gaia, in the church of Torne, a community of Lusitanian (Anglican) rite. As a particular case study, we evoke the Christian Endeavor League of Prado, established in another Lusitanian church, since the 1920s, revisiting its different mechanisms and strategies of integration and sociocultural animation. We conclude that the Christian Endeavor Leagues functioned as engines of social integration and change, having as their nuclear aim the promotion of the individual, on an ethical level and of personal commitment to Christian faith and religious institutions.
