Description
Summary:Australia's Fifth Plenary Council offers a test case in synodality, an ecclesiastical event taking place during the consultation phase for the Synod on Synodality called by Pope Francis. In this article I draw on an ecumenical critique of a bureaucratic and process-driven mentality in the life of the church by the Anglican theologian, Eric Mascall (1905-1993). The call for synodality by Pope Francis carries great hope, but runs a double risk for events such as the Plenary Council: on the one hand, it can fall prey to a de-sacramentalised vision of the church with an overemphasis on governance and bureaucracy to the detriment of mission; and on the other hand, the Plenary Council risks marginalising the lay faithful who are engaging already in the mission, overlooking the rich prayerful and charitable ways in which Christians are immersed in the mystery of Christ in the secular world.
