Summary:One of the difficulties in reflecting on the theology of the sacrament of "matrimony" is that its theology may seem estranged from the reality of "marriage". In this article a broader approach is used to address this difficulty, particularly with respect to that aspect of the sacrament that is both very human and very "of God"-that is, the intense intrinsic closeness of the conjugal act, its wonder, and life-giving grace.
