| Zusammenfassung: | The aim of this paper is to reconstruct some of the historical milestones of the reception of certain apocalyptical images ("the Heavenly Jerusalem" and "Ezekiel's Chariot"). Since their creation until the Spanish conquest of New Spain (now Mexico) in the 16th century, these images were interpreted, with the passing of time, from different points of view. These perspectives merged in the doctrines of Gioacchino da Fiore, whose interpretation of the old Jewish visions lived on, with different nuances, in the project carried out by the Franciscans who evangelised that land. Provided with this ideological program, they gave rise to a spirituality constituted by a polygon of complex vertices: the old Jewish apocalyptical tradition; the doctrines elaborated by the Calabrian abbot that were later established in Spain by means of the Franciscan tradition; the expectations of the foundation of the Reign of Christ, confirmed by the discovery of the new lands; some of the utopian elements of Thomas More's work; and, of course, the interpretation of those doctrines that the converts could give through their own cultural memory.
