Итог: | In my contribution, I aim to describe the mythopoeic narrative about the vtračenyj raj ("lost paradise"), its main themes, and its role in the post-disaster recovery processes that have begun in the Chernobyl-hit areas (North Ukraine). The vtračenyj raj narrative - being rooted in a pervasive ideology of attachment to the native land (ridnyj kraj) - pivots on an imagined Edenic idyll in which the disaster did not occur and the local communities did suffer no harm nor loss. I maintain that this mythopoeic narrative activates supportive emotional and cognitive resources and helps communities to establish a renewed social project. I also intend to rethink the social role of burial sites in Chernobyl Exclusion Zone: there the cemeteries are continuously visited against the official proscriptions and a number of small rural communities keep on cultivating their lands despite the environmental contamination. These sites help people to activate mnestic and emotional connections with and among the places: not only physical places, but also remembered, transfigured, imagined ones. (English) |
