520 |a Rightfrominception,Arabichasdemonstrateditspotentialityasalanguagewelladequatetoprovidethereligious,economic,politicalandsocialneedsoftheNigeriannation.ItwasinthesameveinthatthefirstNigeriantowritehadtoemployArabictodosobecauseitwastheonlymeansofliteracyinNigeriauntiltheintroductionofChristianityinthe19thcentury.Arabic,beingthelanguageoftheQur’an,hasalwaysbeenconsideredasanimmanentpartofIslamiceducationwithspiritualquintessence.ItisconsideredasareligiousobligationbyMuslimstolearnhowtoreadtheQur’anandteachittoothersinitsoriginallanguage-Arabic.TheProphetMuhammad(S.A.W.)said:"thebestofyouishewholearnstheQur’anandteachesittoothers"Hence,thezealtoacquireliteracyskillsinthelanguagewiththeaimofreadingtheQur’anandteachingitisasocialrequirementandatthesametime,afulfillmentofreligiousduty.Theeffortsoftheitinerantandindigenousscholarscontributedto the development of Arabic literacy in West Africa, especially in South-western Nigeria.Arabic,beingalanguagespokenbyalargenumberofspeakersspreadallovertheworld,isnotonlyvitalforanyexternalglobalbusinesswithAraborganisationsandconsumers,butalsoforeducationandacademics.QuranicschoolsthatwereestablishedpavedwayforcreationofmanyfacilitiesforthestudyofArabicatsecondaryandtertiarylevels.ThispaperappraisesthecontributionofArabiclanguagetoliteracyinSouth-west,NigeriaandtheeffortsofMuslimscholarsintheattempttodevelopliteracyinNigerianinstitutionsoflearning.Datawerederivedfrombooksandjournalarticlesandwereclassifiedandsubjectedtoqualitativeanalysiswithhistoricalresearchmethod.ThisstudyintendstofillthegapintheestablishmentofmodernizedQuranic/ArabicschoolsalsoknownasmodernArabicinstitutionsandformalWesterninstitutionswhichgaverisetochangeinthesystemofArabicliteracyfrominformaltoformal.Thefindingsandsuggestionsprovidedinthiswork,ifproperlystudiedandadequatelyincorporatedintothecountry’seducationalplan,willnotonlyenhancethedevelopmentofeducationinNigeriabutbettertheroleofthelanguageforthe purpose of social integration.
