Summary:The role of religion in Chicano/Latino history has been sorely neglected over the years. That is starting to change as more historians begin to understand the important role that religion and faith have played in these communities. This edited volume adds to this new historiography and is highly welcomed. It showcases some of the historians who are leading in this direction. While there are many aspects of Chicano/Latino religion that can be studied, this edited volume focuses on the role of what I call faith politics or what the editors refer to as faith and power. This is the influence that faith has played in bringing about positive social change for Chicanos/Latinos. It suggests that people’s faith, whether Catholic, Protestant, Mormon, or Pentecostal, has been a key motivator in such changes. It is the idea that a faith based on the Gospels and the life of Jesus calls for social justice and therefore addresses social sins, as noted by practitioners of liberation theology, that contribute to the oppression of people and must be contested and overcome ...
