Description
Summary:Contemporary Africa is experiencing a dynamic growth of churches, sects and other religious groups, mostly Neo-Pentecostal. What is the reason for such a huge interest in these new forms of religiosity? Is the role of the so-called mission churches declining? The author argues that the attractiveness of the new religious groups has its source in the adaptation of strategies of the traditional religions to the new needs resulting from the changing conditions of life. In the first section the author presents the logic of remedying misfortune in traditional practices. How is the specific healer-diviner chosen? How does the etiological model of misfortune influence the ritual practice? The following sections deal with the process of explaining and overcoming misfortune in the Neo-Pentecostal churches, with special emphasis given to the role of liturgical assemblies. Though Pentecostalism distances itself from traditional religion, its strategies applied in the case of misfortune resemble the traditional procedure. This resemblance can explain the success of Pentecostal churches in Africa.
