Riepilogo:In the last 200 years the church had undergone a long way from the critique of democracy towards its careful acceptance. A major role was played here by Pope John Paul II, who has recalled the issue of democracy especially in his social encyclicals: Sollicitudo rei socialis and Centesimus annus. The independence and simultaneously the specific character of the vision of democracy by Pope John Paul II are being distinguished by following factors: an axiology based on religion as the foundations of democracy, specific ethical and social rules, an integral view of man as a persona grace with a special dignity, demanding the securing of its subjectivity in social life, a proper understanding of human rights (especially freedom), creation of a state of law considering more than just legal procedures. The analysis of these factors creating democracy leads to a conclusion that its evaluation formulated by John Paul II has varied usually between a careful acceptance and often harshly expressed criticism.
